The oblivious Ms. Spellings

Dismissing the data in a report released by the Education Department last week (and reported on this blog on Monday), Margaret Spellings, Secretary of Education, lent her support to a Republican-backed plan for a $100-million school voucher plan.

How about spending that money to improve public education instead of taking away from it? "We don't have enough certified teachers," they say. TRAIN SOME. Private institutions don't care about hiring certified teachers - and it shows, where it counts.

I am not convinced of a cause and effect relationship between spending per pupil and the quality of education. Compare Montana and Washington D.C., public school performance and private school performance. Regardless, $100,000,000 may be a lot to you and me, but it is a drop in the ocean compared to total spending on education.

Montana and DC are about as different as you can get. I don't think it's worthwhile to compare.

The fact remains that city schools - and especially "inner-city" schools - need financial help. Decades of unequal distribution of funds have created circumstances under which inner-city schools can do little but struggle.

Don't you find it ironic that the places that could really use the financial help are the ones that get shafted? Does it make sense for a public school in an upper-middle-class community to have rooms of computers while schools in lower-middle-class areas have to fight for enough money to buy a few computers? Keep in mind that the former school likely has FAR less students than the latter.

If we want everyone to have equal opportunities, we have to start them out as equals as much as possible. Public education should be a great equalizer, not a further cause of division and separation of economic classes.
