The Department of No Defense

Why in the world is the DoD's updated Counterinsurgency Manual (warning: large PDF) being released publicly?

I'm guessing it's no surprise, then, that the "counterinsurgency" has found it, and is mocking us for it.

Read a synopsis at IraqSlogger.

Probably because it is a document that requires absolutely no classification. There are no secrets, nothing given away in the document. It is a documentation of what is already known to the world.

so , you are saying the counter-insurgency manual should be made easily available to the insurgency?? Funny, the Bush administration flipped out when the Times printed an article about America monitoring bank accounts from SWIFT, which Bush told the whole country after 9-11 that he was doing. Why did they attack the Times for printing previously known information???

Aren't we, then, just doing all sorts of research work for our ENEMIES?

It is sad that some feel it is important to keep the treatment of "detainees" a secret, yet a compilation of "known" information on counterinsurgency DURING a conflict with a counterinsurgency is not something meriting some degree of secrecy.

I want an explanation as to why that makes sense.
