Real ID = Big Brother?
ABC News gives a good overview on what Real ID is, and some issues with the program.
Basically, Real ID would force all states to have uniform but stricter standards for issuing driver's licenses - you'd be required to show proof of citizenship, for example. It would also enable communication between state DMVs to reduce issuance of fraudulent licenses, and mandate anti-counterfeiting measures.
It sounds harmless on the surface - and it can be harmless, with the right people in power (whatever century that may happen in). However, as this is a Bush administration tactic, we have to scrutinize further. Eventually, you will be required to show Real ID to board a plane (unless you're over 50 - good random number, wait until we get 55-year-olds with bombs in their suitcases!). People in states that refuse compliance with Real ID standards will not be able to board planes in a few years! Under Bush, political opponents have been treated as if they were potential terrorists when they try to board a plane! They could revoke political opponents' right to drive? Also, Bush hacks + database = election fixing... there's just no other way to say it.
As the Bushies are total corporate whores, those databases will be sold to the highest bidder. (Just wait until random companies know when your birthday is.) And, of course, the FBI will have its access as well. TruthNews has more on the real motivations behind Real ID.
In a related story, ISPs have found an excuse to monitor Internet traffic! Blame it on copyright infringement! We have to record all your data to make sure you're not stealing from the other corporations! Corporations serve each other's interest now, not the public's. Maybe it's because so many of the same people are significant stockholders of the same corporations...
